Why Does Life Seem To Go So Fast?

Written by:

Yesterday was Sunday.  Did you have time to rest, relax with family and/or go to church?  If not, was it because Sunday became your day to catch up or is Sunday just like any other day for you?  Don’t get me wrong, if there is one thing I’m going to do is get my nap at some point during the weekend.  But the rest of the week I seem to be constantly on the go.

Presently, I live in Biloxi Mississippi – hardly a fast-moving place to live by any standards – and I still seem to always be on the go.  I’m trying to determine why I always seem to have something to do other than relaxing and I have what I think may be good possibilities.

  1. I may just be spreading myself too thin.  If this is the culprit, reducing some of my activities could make those that remain better.  One thing that will NEVER get eliminated is family so adding time to spend there would be nothing but positive.
  2. Our current culture sucks us into more complexity than ever before.  Remember when we were kids and used to go outside to play?  I wanted to go outside every single day to ride my bike, play wiffle ball or kill ants – don’t ask about the ants.  Kids don’t really go outside like that anymore.  Part of this could be due to computers/video games and part of it could be due to kids not being safe out there anymore.
  3. Everybody wants to be rich.  Do we want too much stuff?  Is too much of my time being spent trying to chase material wealth?  Sure, I would like to be wealthy (different than rich), but I’m only going to go so far to do so – I still have to live with myself.  I know and see people all the time that would cut someone to get ahead.  I still have to live with a code (of ethics).
  4. I’m getting old(er).  It couldn’t be that could it?  :D  I know I’m slowing down.  There used to be a time where I was, shall we say, a night owl.  There is no way I could keep up with my younger self.  Hmm, maybe that is why I have to get those naps.
I’m determined to become more efficient with my time.  The first area I’m going to work on is reducing the time I spend doing things I don’t enjoy.  I’m about to be in the market for a new job and that is one thing I really want – I want to like what I’m doing.  I like what I’m doing now, but it is time for a change.  If you were to look at your daily activities, are you getting the most out of your time?  Remember, life is short so we should enjoy it to the fullest.

    Tom,
1.) I too live a rather chaotic life and never seem to be able to get enough done in the 24 hours of each day. Sure, I think we all tend to spread ourselves too thin. A lot of us attempt to balance work and family with leisure or rest and relaxation as the least important priority (Who am I kidding, its not a priority?)

2.) Oh man do I miss those days. I remember the only concern I had was staying outside playing with friends until the last speckle of sunlight was left in the sky. Our families rule was once the street lights came on it was time to get home or suffer the consequences. I wish I could take a year off and be a kid again.

3.) Of course we all want to be rich, it is what drives the American dream but there is more than one way to go about it. Of course there are those cut throat people as you mentioned who don’t care who gets hurt in the process but then there are others who reach for the clouds using nothing but hard work and creativity. I’d like to think I fit in with the ethical approach but then again, I’m not rich so it’s not going so well as of yet. lol

4.) I also remember pulling all nighters and still being able to work an eight hour shift, now I’m lucky to stay up till 11pm. It sucks getting old.

Things are only going to get rougher with the declining economy. We will all have to work even harder to hold our positions and will likely have to tolerate more from our employers because of the need to keep a job. I wish it was as simple as organizing our time better and who knows maybe it is but I don’t see that working for me very well.

Ryan Kazinecs last blog post..Are you over the age of 36? You’re a minority on Social Networks, but why?
