Video Captures a 78-year-old Man Get Struck By Car, But No One Helps Him
Written by: Kim Sawyer
What would you do if you saw someone get hit by a car? What if that person was an elderly person? Would you stop whatever you were doing and help that person? Would you call 911 as soon as you witnessed the accident? What would you want people to do if it were your loved one? Well, last week, in Hartford, Connecticut, it seems a 78-year-old man was a victim of a hit-and-run; however, and according to a streetlight surveillance camera that caught this accident on camera, no one seemed to help him as he laid motionless on a busy street The camera showed people gawking, but not helping. In addition, the camera reflected that a driver stopped briefly, but then pulled back into traffic. The camera also showed a man on a scooter slowingly circling the victim, and then riding away, without attempting to help him.
Based on what the camera depicts, it is safe to assume that we’ve become or are becoming a heartless society, right? The video from the camera reflects that society’s moral compass has is way off base. But what if people did call 911 — the camera just didn’t capture those people. What if the people who were driving by called, but they continued to drive. What if the people who stood around and watched this man lie in the street actually tell someone, who was not in the camera’s view, to call 911? Does that excuse the people’s actions who were caught on camera?
I remember about 9 or 10 years ago, I was driving to work and I witnessed a school bus hit a lady who was walking in the crosswalk. She had the right away, but the school bus driver did not see her. I immediately pulled over, while on the phone to 911. I waited until the ambulance and police arrived to provide my statement. Thank God that lady was not seriously injured. That’s why this is very disturbing to me. I know I would want someone to help me if they see I’ve been injured or am being harmed, etc. I’m not understanding this whole incident.

This was part of my thought process when typing the Quality of Life article. This is what we have come to: a sometimes heartless society. Is it really that hard to call 911 when you see someone get hurt? I don’t think the victim’s age matters as much as the incident itself.

I watched this video over and over when I first saw it online. Many articles I pass over, but this one caught my attention, and I was stuck on it for a while. Since then I have told people about it. My main point was how horrible it was and how Hartford Connecticut just lost my respect. I know they are considered a snooty city but as far as I’m concern, they are off the Richter scale on apathy. How dare any human being that has a brother, sister, mother, father, child, dog, cat, goldfish, etc, alive and living, pass by someone in distress and not help!!! But for the grace of God, that could have been you or your loved one laying in that Connecticut street! From my understanding in reading the article, many news reports carried the story and gave Hartford the tongue lashing they deserve.
About 20 years ago, I was at my grandmother’s house when lightning struck a tree. My mother and I went around the corner to see what had happened. Unbeknownst to us, my cousin’s was the victim of that tree falling on his car and nearly killing him. Funny thing, many people were standing around the scene as onlookers, but no one was doing anything to help! My mother, being the praying woman she was, went straight up to the car and began rubbing his head and calling on Jesus. At this point, we still didn’t realize it was my cousin. We just had the mind to go up to the car and help the person in need.
A few weeks ago there was an accident on interstate 85. My husband put the car in park and said: I’m going in. Although there were a few people at the scene, no one around us went up to help. I just don’t understand. At some point in all of our lives, we, or a loved one, will need help! And we all know what the Golden Rule says.
Hartford, Connecticut, shame on you!

What have we come too? Its sad to see so many by standers and no one offering to perform CPR, check to see if he’s conscious or anything! Personally, I would not feel comfortable leaving the scene of an accident (or standing around) without offering some kind of support. Hopefully, the video caught the license plate of the driver.
