Vaccinations: What To Do (or Not Do)

Written by: Kim Sawyer

My husband and I are expecting our first child so I have been reading up on the controversy concerning vaccinating childen. This is some distrubing stuff. To think that more and more people believe that vaccinations play a huge factor in children developing Autism, Asperger’s, ADD, ADHD, etc. is not something a new mother wants to hear. Some people say DON’T DO IT! Others say trust your doctor – they know what’s best. Then, there are those who say, spread the vaccines out, over time. A friend of mine just told me her son has Asperger’s and she truly believes it’s from him being vaccinated early on as a baby. She’s referred me to books, websites, etc. and she told me to do all the research that I can. But then, I have other friends who say they followed what their children’s doctors said, and they haven’t had any problems, but they have girls. I have read that Autism affects boys more than girls. I know people, especially parents, feel very strongly about this. Just when I decided to blog about this, I received my Time magazine with the cover story being: The Truth About Vaccines. How convenient for me, right?

Time magazine states the following: By the age of 2, children will receive 28 vaccination doses, which is what is recommended by the CDC; 77% of kindergartners in the US are up to date on their vaccinations; 2% – 3% of school age US children have received an exemption from vaccinations; scientists do not believe vaccinations cause autism; as families forgo immunizations, cases of measles are on the rise. As far as I’m concerned, all of this information is overwhelming. How do you feel about it?

    Hi Harry,

Thanks for the link. This definitely helps me in my research. I’m getting a better understanding of the whole controversy.

Kim, I feel so bad for you and your dilemma. I raised two children who had all their vaccinations. As far as I’m concerned, they are perfect, but I have heard the other side. Interesting, my new next door neighbor has a four month old son who just got four shots at once. I’m not sure what they were, but I suspect vaccinations. Who knows what the future holds, but I did ask them the day he got the shots if the doctors warned them that in a few days, or a week, or two weeks, he might have a reaction. And they happily said no. A few days later, for one week, he did not eat and they had him at the emergency room. Ok, my thing is, are doctors just coasting through life??? Why in the world don’t they tell us all the side effects of things these days? I am confident that baby Johnny was just having a reaction to the shots, but when they went to the hospital, they could give her NO answers. I told her, surely it was a reaction. Her (the mother) comment was, I wish they would have at least told me that. My point, keep researching Kim and make up your own mind. I guarantee you; you could walk into five doctor’s offices, and probably come away with five different answers. They might be similar, but each and every doctor puts his/her own slant on things and/or always leave something out you should know! Go in prayer. Let ‘THE DOCTOR” lead you on this one.

Kim, I agree with Kathy. My girls took all the shots and never had a problem. It’s funny though that as an adult I had a horrible reaction to a Tetus shot. It just takes prayer for EVERYTHING. I don’t know of any girls personally with Autism but personaaly know a few boys and the ones we hear about on TV all seem to be boys too.

  5. Kim Says:

Karol Ann, I”m with you on prayer. I have to do it – I don’t have any other options.

  6. Kim Says:

I hear you loud and clear Kathy about THE DOCTOR. It’s covered.

  7. Tom Sawyer Says:

There you go! Take the shot, pray for God’s anointing on the shot and move on. I could speak on that right there…I’m back, I had to run around the room real quick!

Going to an astronomer for advice on vaccination makes about enough sense as going to your hairdresser to get a tune-up for your car.

The truth is that fourteen vaccines are given to children today–measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, haemophilus influenzae type b, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rotavirus, pneumococcus, chickenpox, and influenza. Some require more than one dose to be effective.

Several studies completed in the US and Europe have concluded that there is no link between vaccines and autism. Rather, autism is much better understood today than 20 years ago and in fact, children are more likely to have a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum Disorder today (which includes Aspergers). In the past they would have been diagnosed with ADD, mental retardation, or just labeled weird.

We don’t know what causes autism but there seems to be a genetic component. Fathers over age 40 seem to be more likely to have children with autism–sor t of like the risk for Down’s babies among mothers over 35. As a non-medical person, I wonder if current or past illicit drug use and/or excessive alcohol use on the part of one or both parents contributes as well.

I have a dear friend who is leaning against vaccinating her baby due Feb 09 because of this hysteria. She is much younger than me and did not grow up seeing polio survivors with their withering limbs, or experience whooping cough (pertusis) as I did. I hope the poor kid is spared this.

Hi ItshotinPHX. Welcome to 7DayBuzz. Thanks for your information on vaccinations. I went back and forth with this and decided to get my daughter vaccinated. She’s gone through 2 sets of shots already and she’s perfectly fine.

On a side note, I was born and raised in Phx, so I know how hot it can get there! That’s one thing I don’t miss about Phx – the heat!:–)

Kim, did you see Private Practice last week? If you didn’t see it, go online and watch it. It was about this. A mother had three sons. One had Autism, the baby son wasn’t vaccinated, and the other one got the measles and died. She refused to vaccinate the baby because she swears and declares the vaccination gave the other son Autism. After the one child died, the doctor strode right pass the disagreeing mother and gave the baby the vaccination against the mother’s will. My real comment here is, OMG! Can you say sexy! When he strode (not walked, it was much more powerful) pass her and, as the care provider he took an oath to be, took matters into his own hands, it had such a great impact on me!

That was TV. In real life I’m sure he would have gotten sued. Oh… but was that manly take chargeness sexy!

Sorry, I’ve digressed…. so shoot me! :o ) (no pun intended)

  13. Kim Sawyer Says:

Yep I saw it. I can’t remember if the one who died was vaccinated. Was he?

You think Cooper’s sexy? I agree with you about a take charge man,but Cooper??!!!!!

  14. Kathy Curry Says:

I think only the oldest was vaccinated and I don’t think Cooper is sexy but I think what he did at that moment was sexy!
