Two Thriving Industries In This Economy
Written by: Tom Sawyer
Stripping and adult films are doing well in this economy.
Women who were struggling to make around $2,000 dollars a week are making that much in a good night dancing at a strip club. Many of these are educated women who are qualified to do other jobs – so much for saying they are working the pole to pay for college.
With the job market what it is, many women are looking at dancing as a way get by in tough times; many dancers are making $100,000-$300,000 dollars per year. When you think about the fact that many of these women were “forced” to the industry as a way to make ends meet I would say their mission is complete: those ends are meeting nicely.
As can be expected, nerves probably play a part in dancing for the first time. Some women use alcohol as a way to calm their nerves while others use techniques often applied to other nervous situations. “It is like giving a speech, but instead of imagining everyone naked, you’re the one who’s naked,” said one woman new to the industry. Yeah, whatever.
On one hand you (may) have morals concerning the industry while on the other hand you have 5 times more income. I could see where that could be a tough decision, but once a woman is on the pole there is no turning back. But stripping still isn’t the worst thing they could be doing.
Once a woman dances, those who saw her naked will have that image in their minds forever, but adult films is another story. Once a film is made, that tape, disc or file can be played over and over again. Years from now, that decision to have sex on film will still exist for anyone to see. It is a serious decision to make with immediate rewards. But what is the real price these women (and men) pay?
These industries have been called recession-proof and maybe it is true. However, while there is nothing illegal about stripping or working in the adult film industry, those decisions stick similarly to a criminal’s record. Is it really worth it?

I’d love to make $2000.00 in one night! What is the age, height and weight limit? I’d imagine I have three strikes…

My daughters best friend married young and chose badly. Her husband turned out to be an abusive alcoholic and she eventually left him and had to find a way to support herself and her boys. She worked as a stripper for a few years and although I wasn’t thrilled about it, I couldn’t argue with the hours and the money she made. She was able to support herself and her kids by working just a few hours per night. She was home with them all day and went to work after they were in bed. She was like a daughter to me so it was difficult to deal with at first but I’ve always been proud of her for having the courage to get out of a bad marriage and for doing whatever she had to do to take care of her boys. She’s a hairstylist now and makes good money doing that.

So do you think the women who do this are only doing what they need to do to support themselves in tough times? It seems like you struggled with it morally, but thought the results were there so lived with it.

Morally, I disagree with this. I understand the lure of the money and sometimes people feel this is their only option. If it were womeone I knew, I would definitely try to talk them out of it. I guess it’s to the point where some people feel they have to do what they have to do.

I think a lot of women do it because it’s a way to make good money while working only a few hours a night. Although I did struggle with it morally I know as a mother I would have done almost anything to make sure my kids had a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. I thank God I have a great husband who always put our family before himself and worked two and sometimes three jobs to do it. He never complained and during some tough times when I was seriously ill he actually wore some tennis shoes that were taped together with duck tape while making sure our kids always had decent shoes. The kids used to tease him about it but I have often wished I had kept one of them just to remind us of those tough times. Unfortunately, not all women are as lucky as I am so I wouldn’t judge them for finding a way to provide for their kids. I don’t know of many working class jobs that pay as well.

Hey Miss Elaine. As a new mother, I understand the philosophy of doing whatever needs to be done to provide for your kids. And, I, too, do not judge those who choose to strip to provide for their kids because I know a lot of jobs do not allow one to make that amount of money, in the least amount of time. But my question is: Is that the “easy” and most convenient option?
