Tiger-riffic!

Written by: Tom Sawyer

Trailing by 1 on the 18th, and final, hole he needed to forget the pain and sink a 14-foot birdie to tie the score and force an improbable playoff. Ladies and gentlemen, Tiger Woods!

Are you serious? This is a new one for us. Just when we thought we witnessed all the greatness, here he comes and does this! I actually turned the TV off because I thought it was over only to receive a text message that I didn’t believe. Yes, Tiger Woods has shown once again that he is the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Golf is arguably the hardest sport in the world and Tiger Woods is known to not only have seemingly super-natural skills, but unbreakable concentration. The performance Tiger has put on thus far in the 2008 US Open has surely put all his concentration to the test. His situation was mind over matter – the matter being a surgically repaired left knee. Many of us wouldn’t be able to get into the car pain-free at this point in rehab, but Tiger walked a championship golf course for four straight days and put an incredible amount of torque on his knee along the way.

The result is an incomplete work and a masterpiece at the same time. See, the tournament isn’t over because there is a tie at the top of the leaderboard and the US Open rules call for a complete round of 18 holes to determine the winner instead of a sudden-death playoff. The winner will be determined today, but in our minds we surely have to consider Tiger a winner already considering the pain he went through to get to this point.

He started the day one stroke up, but lost the lead after the first two holes. He was in obvious pain most of the day, scratch that, he was in pain most of the weekend. What normally was audible disgust with a bad shot turned into audible pain. Those of us watching probably felt sorry for him, but I’m sure his competitors relished the opportunity to beat the world’s number 1 golfer. For all of them but one, depending on the outcome of the playoff round, it wasn’t meant to be.

The Sports Beat is a new category that we are going to give a try.

Tiger makes me want to learn how to play golf!

If anyone didn’t see it yet, Tiger won the US Open today! He won it on a sudden-death playoff hole; they were tied after the 18-hole playoff round. Tiger is amazing!

    Again, go Tiger!

Extra, extra read all about it! Not only was Tiger coming off knee surgery, he has two stress fractures in his left leg and will have season-ending surgery on his ACL. How would you feel if you were one of the other pro golfers? They just got beat by someone playing against doctor’s orders.

    Tiger is amazing!

I’m happy for Tiger but forgive me for still having issues with him saying he was not black. I live in close proximity to a 25 year old woman that is half black and half Puerto Rican. She told me in the sweetest most sincere voice, but I am not black. She is darker than me! She has never in 25 years dated a black man! Lawd have mercy! What is up with those refusing to be black? I know Tiger’s nationality is made up of this, that, and the other, but I’m sure the same holds true for us all when you get down to it. I think that comment was so wrong and it hurts to know how loyal blacks are to him when apparently, he wanted to denounce any connection with African Americans.

If I got this whole story wrong, somebody correct me.

No, I don’t think you got it wrong, but he is just showing that like all us humans he is flawed. I think it has something to do with the PR machine that is Tiger Woods. Michael Jordan, Whitney Houston and Tiger Woods, please don’t be fooled when someone’s PR people paint a picture that is too good to be true. I think when it comes to comments like this we should feel sorry for him. Of course he is black! if he lost all his money, his golf game went away and he needed to get by he would be as black as the day is long!

    lol. I know that’s right!
