@Common Cents (a.k.a. Tony Banks) -
I was going to spend a significant amount of time finding sources to discredit every so called fact listed here but decided my time would better be used cleaning out my garage. However, I do have time to make a couple of points. First, let's make it very clear. Your facts are not facts they are simply opinions based on absolutely no concrete evidence.

Fact #1 (Opinion #1)
Private insurance companies are literally “raping” us with outrageous costs for healthcare. If these insurance companies have to compete with a national healthcare plan, it will force them to lower their prices—period.

Response: I'm no expert Mr. Banks but last time I checked insurance companies don't impose health care costs, that my friend is determined by the hospital or health care facility. Your insurance carrier imposes premiums and then pays a percentage of your medical bills after you've reached your deductible. To say they will be forced to lower their prices is absurd. Private sector competition is what forces competitive pricing but that is irrelevant because the constantly rising health care costs. (The amount the hospital charges)

Fact #2 (Opinion #2)
Republicans argue that Obama’s vision for a national healthcare plan is nothing less than “a government takeover of the health care industry” and we should just let the free market work it out. This is baloney. We will STILL have the option of going with a private insurance company–if we choose and most importantly: The free market has not worked perfectly when it comes to health care…look at the mess its got us in right now!

Response: Okay, again this is simply your opinion and is completely invalid. First off, there isn't a republican out there that thinks the health care system doesn't need some serious change but there also isn't a republican out there that thinks the Government should run it. Let's recap, Obama has stated in the past that he had no desire to run the banks or Auto companies yet we somehow now own several of the largest banks and auto companies, hence the government now has control. He's also stated that his administration will be transparent and has failed miserably in that department. So excuse me if I don't happen to trust our president if he says he doesn't want government ran health care.

Fact #3 (partial fact #3)
The number of uninsured Americans is growing, premiums are skyrocketing, and more people are being denied coverage every day. Who’s going to end up paying for all the uninsured?!? You and I (taxpayers). Fixing this healthcare crisis by overhauling the health care system is essential to bringing down the federal deficit.

Response: Part of your comment is actually fact, the number of uninsured Americans is growing and premiums are increasing. People aren't denied coverage unless they have preexisting conditions that keep them from qualifying. People however can't afford insurance in a lot of circumstances.

Defining Fixing is the missing link. There certainly is a problem but it is multi faceted and there is no simple answer. If Obama is truly willing to work on the health care problem with all political parties then that's great but at this point I will believe it when I see it.

One issue that would certainly help the cost of health care is enforcing immigration laws and denying health care service to undocumented individuals. I searched for definite statistics but couldn't find any that I would consider solid enough to represent the entire country so we'll look at a couple a key states.

"In Texas, where the state comptroller estimates illegal immigrants cost hospitals $1.3 billion in 2006, the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston is considering denying cancer care to such immigrants."(source: http://tinyurl.com/29awge)

"One thing is clear: Undocumented immigrants are driving up the number of people without health insurance. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that 59% of the nation's illegal immigrants are uninsured, compared with 25% of legal immigrants and 14% of U.S. citizens. Illegal immigrants represent about 15% of the nation's 47 million uninsured people — and about 30% of the increase since 1980."(source: http://tinyurl.com/29awge)

@Common Cents (a.k.a. Tony Banks) - Thank you for those comments! This situation has negatives and positives on both sides. On one hand, the quality of healthcare could go down if this works out. I have experience with a form of government healthcare and I don't like it; yesterday I opted to make my primary care physician someone who isn't on an Air Force base. Conversely, Tony has pointed out how the private insurance industry is getting fat off of customers.

[sigh] I'm right back to what I've been saying about other businesses: the economy could get better overnight if these businesses would accept making a lot of money over the long haul instead of making a TON of money right now. Some say that is moving towards socialism, but I say that is moving away from greed. It isn't like it would change their way of life - if everything is cheaper they pay less too.
Reply

@Tom Sawyer - My comment on Oprah was condescending if you didn't catch onto that and I know nothing about Chuck Grassley. By the sounds of it you expect me to take him serious simply because he wears an (R) next to his name. Much to the dismay of your post today I don't worship a party line nor do I follow any one group. I am a free thinker. I just got done working 14 hours so my official response to your post today will be delayed until at least tomorrow.

I'm beginning to realize that it doesn't matter what our president does, certain people will find excuses for his failed policies. Here's something you might want to read and think about.
