Yes I agree with that because I think Obama's rock star image had more to do with the increase in young voters than his race. It was good to see the passion and excitement from a lot of people who have been completely ambivalent about politics in the past. I was really glad to see young people getting excited and hope that in the future they will become involved in their own local communities so they can have a say in what goes on around them. I'm also glad that we did vote in a black president even though I strongly disagree with his policies.
I understand the whole affirmative action thing but I think it's gone too far.It has helped a lot of hard working kids who otherwise wouldn't have had a chance and I'm all for that. But there should be assistance for all who are willing to work hard not just minorities. We tried to get help with college loans for Ryan but could never qualify for anything because my husband and I both worked. He tried applying for loans on his own but, because he still lived with us, our income had to be included. If he moved out he would have to work full time and couldn't afford school. We had a very bright and motivated kid who wanted to go to school and he couldn't because of money. It seemed that the more we worked, the less we made so working more to pay for his school didn't seem to be an option either. So he waited until he found a way to go to school through an employer. This company rewards individuals who work hard and are motivated to better themselves by paying for their schooling. It's not limited to minorities. There are conditions that have to be met and I think that should be the case for anyone who gets a free ride. Unfortunately, in our country, free handouts with no conditions have become painfully abundant. We punish hard work by increasing taxes and and reward laziness through all our social programs. These programs may be in serious trouble anyway because the tax increases that are supposed to fund them may not be in the bank after all. It seems that the wealthy are feeling a little fed up. They are starting to think that it isn't worth it to put in those 60 to 70 hour work weeks anymore. They are cutting back and cutting out. ( They are calling into conservative radio in large numbers and Fox is getting emails stating the same thing.) Now that the upper class aren't feeling motivated to work hard who is going to pay for all our social programs? Who's going to pay for unemployment, social security, education programs, law enforcement, fire departments etc... It's a sobering thought.

I think I've noticed some remarks about scholarships before. Can we talk about why these things are so and why affirmative action was/is needed? Where would we be without those programs?

I hope we can agree on this: when America, the majority, decided that one man was better for us than another man, it was done without regard for color.

I think we are generally in agreement, but do disagree on a few individuals.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('2800','Tom Sawyer'); return false;">Reply</a> </div>
