Question of the Day….

How would you feel about legislation passing a bill to pay women, who are on public assistance, $1,000 to have their tubes tied? Please make note of the fact that this will not apply to all women, just those who are receiving government assistance.

I think this would be totally wrong because it would change those women’s lives possibly forever.
Even if someone is on public assistance, their life isn’t over and they deserve a second, third, fourth or fifth chance to change things around. Not knowing what the future holds for them is reason enough to allow them the future freedom to have kids without reversing this procedure.
What we need to change is our morals and work ethics. I’m not saying that every woman who is on public assistance got to that point due to lack or morals or a good work ethic, but there are many who have.
As a woman, would you want someone telling you what to do with your body? If that is the case, should people with the ability to provide not be allowed to have abortions?

I, too, believe this is wrong, but you do realize it is geared more towards African-American women, who are perceived to be on public assistance more than other races?

I was once on public assistance. I now have three degrees, have two children (that work and go to school and are not on public assistance), work for the government, and think of myself as doing ok. I may not be in the upper crust of the middle class, but still, doing ok. I bet whoever posed this question (I’m assuming you didn’t Kim, due to one of your comments to Tom) isn’t in the lower class or maybe even middle class. It frightens/angers me when people get to that cocky place in life where they forget the saying: but for the grace of God, there go I. Better watch it, the script flips all the time… bringing up those that are down, and taking down those that are up!

The legislators should watch the episode of Little House on the Prairie where Ma, by no fault of her own, lost her ability to have children. Devastated her! She had to go to the mountains and be by herself to recoup. You can’t do that to a woman, for any reason. There has gotta be another way.

Actually, I did pose this question. I wanted to see how others feel about because I think it’s wrong. Unfortunately, there are those who think it’s okay (i.e. the representative in Louisiana who is trying to get legislation to pass this bill).
