Piling On the Criticism

Written by:

Happy New Year!

A lot is going on and one thing is for sure: a ton of energy is being spent on bashing President Obama.  One thing I find interesting about the whole thing is that some people say Bush was bashed more while some say Obama is bashed more.  Some say Obama critics are racially motivated and some say it is politically motivated.  When you think about it, the claim of racial motivation was never mentioned about Bush’s critics, but then again race wasn’t an issue with him.

Honestly, I think race has become an issue because 1) it rubs people the wrong way when we have a black president and 2) it rubs people the wrong way when others are happy about having a black president.  Hmmm, I would call that racism, but some people think racial words and actions don’t indicate racism – Rush Limbaugh comes to mind.

I found the comment below on a site and thought some points were interesting.  Are they true or someone’s slanted opinion?  Here we go:

Funny how Republicans take responsibility for NOTHING. Kidda ironic.

Expectations are very high for Obama, period.

America is subjected to a moron cowboy and a warmonger zealot for 8 years and now we have the patience for no one. We have especially little patience for a black man who managed somehow to be the leader of the free world, who makes a REAL easy target.

Conservatives complain that they end up paying high taxes for “free-loaders,” and then they get upset when the President tells the kids who need it most to stay in school, work hard, and get good jobs.

Conservatives complain that this president is piling up the debt, but choose to ignore that he inherited one of the greatest economic disasters in the last 100 years. The Bush administration and Republican controlled congress enacted a 1 Trillion Medicare prescription benefit over 10 years – without raising or saving a penny for it.

The Bush administration cut taxes on the wealthy to the tune of 1.7 trillion over 10 years – all while spending more than any administration in history racking up the debt from a Clinton surplus.

The Obama administration is proposing 1 trillion for health care reform – with a path to paying for it – and conservatives flip their lids and cry “socialism.” What planet do you all live on?

If you prefer a government that governs the least that’s exactly what you are going to get. I don’t believe there can be a intelligent debate with toe tapping Republican propagandists hacks. Hacks don’t want to talk, they just want to be mad about something and government is an easy target.

During the Bush days, the hacks were mad at Saddam, for the wrong reasons but it didn’t stop them from supporting a two trillion dollar tax payer funded unjust war did it? Republican leaders said, “hey be mad at this”, now they are saying, “hey be mad at this”.

The fatalistic elderly of our nation fall in line. Real intelligent.

He (President Obama) will continue to be criticized throughout his appointment. But the viciousness of the criticism amazes me! He’s doing the job he was put in office to do — which is make hard decisions that not everyone will like or agree with. I say, suck it up Obama haters! He’s done a decent job his first year in office.

Wow, this is a very slanted piece you have here. I think what it boils down to as far as who is being criticized more is what views you have. If you are happy with who is in charge and you hear negative comments about them you are going to remember them. If you are unhappy with who is in charge it is very easy to jump on the bandwagon and not realize it. Not to say that the criticism wasn’t deserved but wasn’t there entire shows dedicated to bashing Bush? The Daily show, The Colbert Report, Little Bush. Most people don’t look at it like that because they agreed with what was being said. It’s like Fox or MSNBC, many people don’t think that these organizations are biased because they agree with what is being said. Individuals that have different views can point out biased points of view on either of these stations very often. Other stations such as CNN, NBC, ABC are biased as well but most individuals fail to see that because they agree with what is being said. Back to the racism remarks you have in here. You are right in the fact that there is racism out there, but to say that race was never brought up with Bush in office is a little strange. Maybe because you agreed with what was being said you failed to realize it. President Bush was a Texas man with poor grammar and enunciation skills at times. I can’t count how many times I heard people talk about rednecks/cowboys from Texas but no one spoke up, why? Maybe because a lot of people agreed with what was being said. Is that racism maybe not but it is still hate speech, stereotyping any class of people before meeting them. Not to say that President Bush dealt well with Hurricane Katrina but for a Celebrity to come out and say, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.” As we all know there are both white and black people in southern Louisiana. So was this not racism? Like you said, the president has to make decisions that may be unpopular. The job requires a person with very thick skin, someone who can handle the criticism. I may not agree with all of their decisions but I applaud the current president and all of the previous presidents’ ability to deal with the harsh criticism. So is there currently racism, slanted points of view, extreme criticism? Absolutely! Maybe instead of fighting our leaders and pointing fingers at who is more wrong (because both sides are wrong). We should be changing where we get our information from, i.e. News. Many people confuse the News from entertainment, The Daily show, Glen Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Larry King shows are not the News, they are for entertainment purposes only and should never be confused. If you are getting you’re news from these shows you are seriously misled, if you are getting upset by these shows find something else to watch. The president knows that public scrutiny come with the job; it’s what he signed up for. No matter who is in office they will get thrown under the bus by lobbyists, the News, and the public. The president is not getting sensitive about it, why should we?

    Nathan,

I’m stillwaiting for your valid comparison to the racism since Obama has been preident to Bush. Being a redneck (your words) has nothing to do with a race. Also, nothing was said about a white president before or ever. Obama is half white and it isn’t mentioned – validates my point further. I guess since the white part was tainted he isn’t white in some people’s eyes?

You say this is slanted but isn’t that what I asked? Most of this whole post is from someone else. Are there valid points in the post or was this person way off base?

  4. Nathan Says:

    Tom,

Not really this only adds to the current hatred people hate have for politicians. I’m glad this is from someone else and not yourself. Articles like this do no good, they only put fear into the sheep and rather then educate they brainwash. Making valid points of the failures of one political party can be constructive but to only point out the faults of one side is wrong. Rather than educating it seems that the article was wrote to sway individuals to think a certain way. Similar to the way cults are formed.

So the Kanye West thing wasn’t racist? Alright sounds good to me. Then the only people I think are racist are those that continue to refer to President Obama as our first black president. He is our president regardless of the color of his skin, no one has refered to our previous presidents as “white presidents,” and George Washington is not referred to as, “the first white president.”

Just a thought about the whole racism thing. Tom in your honest opinion do you think that some black people fear if president Obama fails as the president. That it will be hard to get another African American into that seat? Do you think that regardless of the job as president some people will never get over the whole race thing?

@Nathan – “Many people confuse the News from entertainment, The Daily show, Glen Beck, Bill O’Reilly, Larry King shows are not the News, they are for entertainment purposes only and should never be confused. How very true! I refuse to watch these types of shows, especially Glenn Beck! They give their opinions and people mistake the opinions as fact and run with it. I guess it’s because, at the end of the day, and like you mentioned, they agree with what they are hearing.

Oh, before Tom answers your question about President Obama failing, I’d like to weigh in. I think that some Black people (not all) do believe that if he fails as president, that was the only shot we (as the Black race) had. He represents alot – hope, determination, etc. I guess having said all of that, I too believe it will be harder simply because racism has seemed to have “grown” (if that’s possible) since he’s taken office. Does that make sense?
