Money, Popularity And Sin Can Get You Killed

Written by: Tom Sawyer

Money

Retired NFL quarterback Steve McNair hopefully had plenty of money from his playing days. He played in an era where pro athletes, especially key players like quarterbacks, make millions in salary and endorsements. Additionally, McNair had some business interests – he recently opened a restaurant – outside of professional sports.

Have you ever heard the saying “More money, more problems?” One problem, which may not seem like a problem, money can cause is excessive popularity.

Popularity

Athletes, entertainers and public figures often breeze through certain situations as a result of their popularity. They often eat without paying, something that seems so unfair, and they draw more-than-normal attention from the opposite sex. “I ain’t saying she a gold digger, but she ain’t messing with no broke…”

Since we are born with human weaknesses, the amount of popularity some people get turns into a huge negative; just because someone can throw a football 60 yards does not automatically make them equiped to deal with celebrity.

Sin

The seventh of the ten commandments speaks about committing adultery – cheating on your husband/wife. McNair had a girlfriend although he was married. When you read the initial reports, it actually seems like he had a girlfriend and a wife on the side! They didn’t even talk about it at first, but the story was certainly odd since there was no mention of divorce and/or seperation. Basically, he was sinning.

Predictable behavior

So we have a man, McNair, who should have plenty of money, is popular his playing days in the NFL and was cheating on his wife. Oh, he was also suspected of cheating on the woman who he was cheating on his wife with! I guess his first girlfriend thought he was divorcing his wife and there was something so special about her to make him change his ways. Maybe it was all the time they spent together and the Cadillac Escalade he gave her – although she had to make payments on it.

The way the story is developing the girlfriend found out he may have been cheating on her, she had to pay for the “gift” along with a car she couldn’t sell and her rent was going up. At this point the alarm probably went off and she realized where she really stood in the pecking order with McNair. When reality hit, she might have realized she wasn’t as special as she thought she was.

McNair met his girlfriend 6 months ago at a restaurant he frequented with his family. Just think what would have happened, or not happened, if he wouldn’t have cheated on his wife. Normally, the cheater gets caught and may end up breaking up with their significant other. McNair kept on cheating and paid with his life.

It was unfortunately his time to go, but if he wouldn’t have cheated he would probably be somewhere right now enjoying life. Lesson learned?

I love you honey!

This is so sad! I am not a football fan, so I really don’t know who Steve McNair is, but it seems he was a well-known and well-liked player.

I’ve been reading comments on some of the other blogs and man, some people have no sympathy for McNair. Those commenters are saying he got what he deserved because he was cheating on his wife.

    I love you too babe!

I am like you Kim, I didn’t know him either but one of the first things I heard about him was, he was a good man. Uh… excuse me. Let me process this…. cheating on his wife, four children. For me that doesn’t equal a good man, but I get the drift of what she meant when she said it. I guess, until this tragedy, he was considered a good guy. I just posted a story on kleverkathy about relationships. McNair may have even subconsciously inspired me to go ahead and post it. I just don’t understand why, if he was going to divorce his wife, (some reports say maybe it was headed that direction) he didn’t just do it and leave them both with dignity. This kind of thing makes everybody involved look so bad. In some ways, even the wife.

This is sooooooo very, very sad. My heart goes out to him, the wife and the girlfriend/s and the families of all.

@Kathy Curry – I haven’t kept up on it so I didn’t know he was rumored to be about to file for divorce. I agree, if that’s what he had set his mind to do, he should’ve taken the steps to do it.

I’m curious about something you said. In what way does this incident make his wife look bad?

  4. Kathy Curry Says:

The reason I say that is because, from what I heard (all rumors, may be no truth to it) she knew what he was doing but the money is what kept her there and ok with it. I think the question may have arose, why is his wife taking it, and the answer was, she was being taking care of financially. Now, I don’t agree. He was her husband and she doesn’t have to justify staying with him, but I think others may have thought differently. You know how athletes wives and politicians wives always seem to stay, regardless of what the men do to them and most surmise it is because of the money (although I know many, many women who stay and the man has nothing), I think that is kind of the thought with her. Whew! Now, in the end, her staying was a good decision.

Oh okay. I guess I need to read more about this case to get caught up on the facts and well, the “supposed” facts.

@Kim sawyer – I know. I never believe I know the whole truth about anything once it becomes sensationalized. So many times, so much is speculation.

I’m not gonna judge McNair. I don’t believe money killed him. We all make bad choices in life, and he made a fatal one, but I’m not gonna start publically dogging him out for his lifestyle.
