Jesus on Idol – 4/2/08
Written by: Kathy Curry
Remember the week that Dolly Parton was on American Idol? I was fascinated that week; no, not by the singing of the contestants. At that point, all the kids are good. I was fascinated by the songs on the results show the two guests, Dolly Parton and The Clark Brothers, sang. Surprisingly, they both gave our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ His props! Dolly sang a song about all she needed was Jesus and Gravity, and the other group sang an old school song: This Little Light of Mine/Jesus on the Main Line! And although countless songs have been redid/remixed, The Clark Brothers did little to alter this song. Anybody walking through their family room during their performance would have no doubt in recognizing This Little Light of Mine/Jesus on the Main Line. So I ask, are we as a country changing? Are we becoming a Jesus friendlier and Jesus accepting people?
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Lord with all my heart. As I write this, sitting in my truck in Columbus, GA, with the radio station tuned to 100.7 continuous gospel, I crave a more Jesus conscious/friendly/accepting world, but I didn’t think you all agreed! Imagine my delight when what has been called the most watched show on TV (American Idol) showcased two guests, singing songs clearly about my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I was thrilled. Now I can’t say these songs caused a gang of folks to jump up from their couch and run to church to give their life to Christ, but maybe. The scripture says if you are not ashamed of me, I won’t be ashamed of you. Dolly was not ashamed of Him. The Clark Brothers were not ashamed of Him. And apparently, the ever daring FOX network, wasn’t ashamed of Him! You know they knew in advance what each guest was singing and we see, thumbs up it was! My heart was warmed. He (Jesus) crosses all styles and genres. He (Jesus) speaks in country. He (Jesus) speaks in Rock and Roll. Jesus sings! I loved it! Thank you American Idol!
Talk back. Tell me what you think.

You may be on to something Kathy. It seems as though I’m surrounded by more people who go to church and don’t mind having a conversation about Jesus. Just the other day we had an impromptu discussion about Psalms 35 at work. I play my Fred Hammond, Tye Tribbett, etc. on my iPod at work and nobody seems to notice. This is the first time I’ve worked in an environment like this. It is also the first time I’ve been as trusting in so many individuals at the workplace.

It warms my heart that the gospel was able to be preached through song to millions. I believe people want to still acknowledge Jesus and it’s up to us to do whatever we can in little ways to let people know “I’ve been with Jesus.” We do it like Tom mentioned at our work place and we can do it on the streets. When ANYBODY asks me about my car I go into my “the Lord Blessed me with it” speech. At a store I can be getting ready to buy something that’s way on sale and I can talk about the favor of the Lord being on my life to allow me to get what I’m buying. The radio was playing the other day at work on a secular station THEY like to listen to and then Never would have made it came on and I was able to talk about the song and how I had just heard him live a couple weeks ago and how young he is but has such a powerful ministry. THE LORD is shaking things usp and allowing us to be a witness not only about going to church but about the KINGDOM. Freddie said at the concert that we have to take THE MESSAGE wherever we can!!! It’s our commission to tell the world about our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

I remember when I went into the office (and I shared an office with 3 other people), I would play my gospel and no one would get upset. There were numerous times when we’d get into a discussion about God, Jesus, faith, church, etc and I can tell you, those conversations were NEVER dull. Especially when some of the people did not believe in Jesus or that there was only one God. I took my Study Bible to church a few times to share with those that didn’t believe or were unaware of the Message. It was nice.

The more mature I get and the more grounded in God I get, I realize it is my duty to be that Ambassador for Christ. Years ago I would have been a little shy to be that Ambassador, but not now. I just moved and live in a new neighborhood and am around new folks. I could cuss, drink, smoke, dress any kind of way, and entertain all manner of whatnot, and who would care? But not so! As the Clark Brothers sang, I want this little light of mine to shine! I am now in the business of trying to bring souls to Christ. If my life can’t draw someone to Christ, I have to ask myself, is my living in vain?
Hmmmm….. I think I got off track a little. Forgive me.
