iPhones — What’s The Big Deal?

Written by: Kim Sawyer

So, Apple announced today that they were once again lowering the cost of their iPhones (they were originally sold at $599 each, then they were lowered to $399).  As of July 11, 2008, you will be able to get a 16GB iPhone for $299 and a 8GB for $199.  My husband has been anticpating the release of the updated and lowered iPhone for over 3 months now.  He is looking forward to the 3G network and GPS capability of the phone.  When he found out that Apple had delayed release of these updated phones, he was disappointed.  Personally, I think the iPhone is cool.  The graphics are nice and from what I’ve seen, internet access is way better on the iPhones than other phones.

It seems you can only get an iPhone with AT&T.  Why is that?  Do they have a special contract/deal with Apple to be the exclusive seller of the phones?  Obviously, I’m not a techie, but I’m still curious about these phones.  So, what is a 3G network and why is it so beneficial to iPhones?  Does the iPhone allow downloads from iTunes?  Do you have to have a Mac computer to use this phone?  Come one Buzz readers, help me to understand –  what’s the big deal with iPhones?  Are these phones really worth the cost (initial and monthly)?

Tuesday, Tech day on 7daybuzz, is my day of rest. Why, you may ask, because I know literally nothing about technology. When it comes to mobiles phones – when they ring, I answer, when I dial, I hope it works. However, I did just get the new LG enV2 from Verizon and loving it! I have said it is my new play toy. I absolutely love it! It was a mother’s day gift from my beautiful kids. If it were left up to me, I’d still have my previous phone. So I can’t talk to you about the IPhone. I just know I love the technology in my new little friend!

Kathy, and everyone else, technology should be something you can get comfortable with and should have a shallow learning curve. Tuesdays are meant to give everyone a little info about technology that may not have been known before. Our aim is to keep it in simple, easy to understand, language. Just keep reading and things will make more and more sense.

Should the iPhone be a big deal? Yes! Next week we dig deeper into this phenomenon.
