How Do You Protect Your Identity?

Written by:

Do you remember those ads about LifeLock, the company that’s supposed to protect you from identity theft? In the ads, the owner revealed his own social security number and dared identity theft thieves to try and steal his identity. Well, it seems that Lifelock failed its owner. Todd Davis, Lifelock’s owner has had his identity stolen by a guy in Texas. Now the company is being sued by various customers who say the service he provides fails. You think!!! There are so many companies that state they can protect us from identity theft. Who do you believe? Or do we just continue to make sure we shred every single piece of mail we get to ensure the dumpster divers don’t get our information? What do we do?

Is dumpster diving how they steal it? I had a friend whose identity was stolen and it was traced back to when he went to a restaurant. It happened when they took his credit card away from his table to process the payment, as they so often do. Looked up a few weeks later and they were using his card at a camera shop in Japan!!! lol. Imagine that. Now I am always skeptical about them taking my card from the table to process my payment, but what can you do? All nice restaurants do it that way for the convenience to the customer right?

A thief, is a thief, is a thief. A real good, low down thief can probably read your mind and get your info. I guess we just do the best we can to protect what we got.

Dumpster diving is just one way your identity can be stolen. Another way is the way is what happened to your friend. I always shred or tear up any mail with my name on it. But, like your friend, I will hand over my credit card to pay for my meal. So, that is really scary about them taking your card number, writing it down, and then using it wherever.
