Why Did R Kelly’s Trial Take So Long?

Written by: User ImageTom Sawyer (Who am I?)

It has been so long since all the charges were filed, it is almost like we forgot about it. After all this time, the R Kelly trial finally started and I need to be refreshed on all the details of the case. I know he is basically accused of having sex with a teenager, but the other details are just a memory to me.

One reason it is hard to remember has to do with the time between then and now, but also the fact that like has seemingly went on with R Kelly like nothing has happened. I mean, it isn’t like he hasn’t kept making records with this looming over his head. Shouldn’t there be some rule where we (society) doesn’t support someone who has allegedly committed such a heinous crime? Why didn’t someone arrange a boycott or something - where is Al when you really need him? We are partly to blame when someone is a potential criminal and it takes so long to get to the bottom of it all. Why couldn’t we demand the investigation and trial take place immediately? If it turns out that he was guilty all along we should all feel sort of guilty for supporting him during this time; it is almost as if we indirectly helped pay his lawyers.

One thing that isn’t going to help R is the fact that the prosecutors will trot out the marriage to a then 15-year old sensation Aaliyah. There are pictures of the two of them together and everything. How is that for proving a pattern of this behavior. Poor guy. He must just have a problem with the youngsters.

Having sex with a minor is way different then going into a strip club and making it rain or failing to pay a gambling debt. We should have demanded action before now. It isn’t really our fault, but this is something we shouldn’t stand for! What do you think?

I’m surprised it has taken this long. I mean… he is black. Let’s be honest, usually a black man is fried for something of this nature two seconds after the crime is committed. Unless (like you Tom, I have forgotten the details) the girl is black also? As my mom used to say, that do make a difference! I’m guessing she was because history tells us, if a black man commits a crime and the victim is a white woman, they will wake jurors and judges up out of their sleep to get things rolling! Ok, I am exaggerating, but you get my point.

I hear you Tom. I do stand for right. My only thing is; we watched others like Rob Lowe do the same thing and he is a shining star once again, on top. He even had a whole Oprah show (I believe he is her next door neighbor) dedicated to him.

I’m not saying it makes it alright to hold this trial for months and months, I’m just saying in the criminal system, who knows how and why things are as they are. It appears; R definitely has a problem and is committed to the youth. A part of me feels sorry for him because it has to be a sickness. Another part of me, is mad at him for taking an opportunity, not many get and possibly blowing it! And the last part of me is mad at him for embarrassing African Americans.

Whether folks should have continued to buy his records and watch his videos, I don’t know. The bible does say that He reigns on the just and the unjust. I just hope as he goes forward, he will stop it!

I don’t know what to think of this situation. It’s been six years since this came out. I can’t think of a crime where they say “hey, we’ll wait over half a decade before we try you. ” Hey, on one hand I’m like let’s see what his defense is, then I’m like this is how they do for rich white boys, so be it.

I think the trial took so long to come to pass because, like other superstars, R has a lot of money and a lot of attorneys who file numerous continuances to delay the trial. If he was a regular Joe, this trial would have happened a long time ago. I’ve read a little bit about the trial thus far, and it seems R has been identified as the man in the tape by at least 4 witnesses. It is obvious that R should be convicted, but the way our criminal justice system works, the better question is: will he be convicted?

OK. I thought the girl had been identified by some of her childhood friends. One girl even went so far as to talk about how they both had their hair styled at that time. Both R and the girl in question are saying it wasn’t them. How is a jury going to figure this one out? Do they believe the word of the people who are saying they weren’t on the tape or do they believe other people? If they think it is them on the tape R and the girl will be in hot water for lying under oath right?

Money makes the world go round. Even the big wigs like to hear the sound of money and many will do anything for more and more

I rather listen to his hits, then let him be forgotten. Plus everyone is innocence until proven guilty. Lock him up when he is 50 and can’t make hits anymore. Two more years.

I don’t know if the girl will be arrested for lying under oath because she’s really not the prosecutor’s target — R is. To them, she is the victim and they think she’s has been victimized enough. Also, don’t forget one of the witnesses who identified R was the girl’s aunt, who used to be a singer that R produced. That’s a major blow against R. I think the public’s overall consensus is that R is guilty, but what matters is what does the jury think?

There is so much to think about with this case. Often times there are things they bring out in court that we have no idea even took place. But, I do wonder how this could go on so long and nothing happen. The court system is sooooooo interesting.
