Economic Impact At College – Digital Divide

Written by:

What in the world does a college student need with a personal computer?  According to one website, the edzone, there are 101 uses for computers.  Really though, they may be a couple short, but the point is people seem to use computers now more than ever – 50 of those 101 uses are for students.

So what kind of computer does a student need? Most of the computers on the market today will suffice for most students entering into college. They simply need to have network capabilities and run basic software applications like Microsoft Office.  Many future college students could benefit by taking a personal computer, laptop or desktop, to college with them.  Unfortunately, the cost associated with such a large purchase while paying college tuition, causes some to go without.  We Embrace is a nonprofit organization who is extremely concerned about the lack of knowledge and access that impoverished communities have to technology. Therefore, We Embrace’s ultimate goal is to enrich and empower youth, as well as impoverished families, in communities, via technology. By pressing on towards that goal, We Embrace will help diminish the digital gap that exists between urban and surburban communities.

Go to this site – We Embrace - and look at what difference, as small as it may be, that they’ve made so far.  What do you think?  Is there a digital divide, because of economics, that exists between urban and suburban communities?  Let us know what you think.

I agree with your post. Youth who are being raised in communities where technology is less important than wondering where your next meal is going to come from are impacted the most by digital divide. Those youth, when they do go to college, need every type of assistance to help them succeed. In reviewing the We Embrace website, I think this nonprofit agency has a great idea to empower impoverished youth. Thanks for posting this. With our current economy in shambles, it’s easy to forget about the digital divide, especially since some people do not that believe it acually exists.

It would be great if we were a society that helped each other out. I can tell you first hand that some are and some aren’t. We Embrace is an example of a non-profit that does things from the heart. I really wish we had money coming in and could do more for people, but the organization needs funds to make that a reality.

Its not just a digital gap between urban and suburban communities, its a whole education gap. We talked about this topic heavily in many of the classes i have taken. Its a cycle that luckily people have found a way to break. But for an unfortunate majority they are stuck in the never ending cycle. Its a shame to think that because one man has more money then the other his children will recieve a better education then the other. Why cant everyone pay money and get the same education? If a child starts with a one parent family, and the one parent is always at work that leaves the child to home educate themselves versus perents with two parents, and money. These children often times recieve more personal and up close help with home work from their parents or caregiver. So beecause the child was born into poverty they get less of an education, which results in less or poorer grades which results in poorer schools and colleges resulting in lower paying jobs which resluts to having a family and raising them in a lower class community andschool starting the cycle all over. Yes, everyone has the same opportunities to apply. But is everyone on an equal playing field to begin with?
