18 Year Safe Haven

Friday, November 14th, 2008

These are surely terrible times and everywhere we look we find evidence of desperation and what many believe is hopelessness.  Since so many families seek safety, lawmakers have gone so great lengths to give people an out.  But the great state of Nebraska takes the cake today and my mouth was figuratively left open after reading about what is happening there.

Safe Haven laws exist in virtually every state.  The basic premise is this: when a parent feels like nothing else will work, they can drop their baby off at a hospital.  Uh, unless you live in the state of Nebraska.  While every other state uses “infant” in the law, Nebraska uses “child.”  This may seem like a small difference, but this allows a parent to drop off their child, regardless of age, until they are old enough that they can legally kick them out.

This Nebraska law took effect in mid-July and since then more than half of the 33 children dropped off have been teenagers.  Recognizing the problem, lawmakers are convening today for a special session - hopefully to change the wording from “child” to “infant.”  So what do you think happened when residents heard about this special session?  It is sickening (to me at least) to say, but some parents “rushed” to drop their children off before a change to the law was made.

I’m all for child safety and there should be a place for parents to go when/if things get to this point, but there is a point where this becomes ridiculous.  Life is not always easy, but I couldn’t imagine a situation where a parent takes their 18 year-old son or daughter to a hospital to drop them off.  To me this sounds like an adult who is not taking responsibility for being a parent.

If I’m wrong, I would love to hear reasons why this would be a good idea, but it would really have to be good.  This is another sign of how time have changed and changed for the worse.

What Will O.J. Be Sentenced For?

Monday, October 6th, 2008

O.J. was not convicted of those murders. You know, the murders many people thought he committed years ago.  But he has been convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other charges for gathering up five men a year ago and storming into a room at a hotel-casino, where the group seized several game balls, plaques and photos.

First the white Bronco and now a hotel room?  If nothing else, O.J. has been involved in some of the dumbest drama the public has every seen…twice.  Oh well.
O.J. Simpson...Guilty! In the public’s mind, this is justice. Somebody finally got O.J. and when it comes time to sentence him (if I’m not mistaken he is appealing) I think he will be sentenced for those murders more so, or just as much as the charges he was convicted of.  If the 61-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer spends the rest of his life in jail — which is very possible — the majority of Americans will likely shed no tears.  In fact, if he gets a stiff sentence, which I think he will eventually get, there will be some cheers and high-fives in celebration.

What do you think he is going to be sentenced for?  Yes, I know the jury wasn’t supposed to be influenced by the murder cases, but I’m a realist.  Is there really 12 people who have no knowledge or wouldn’t be influenced by the previous trial?  If I was on the jury, I would be upset - you could say highly pissed off.  I would feel this way because the whole thing would be a waste of my time.  I would just be looking at “The Juice” thinking, “How can one person be so stupid in one lifetime?”

Who is paying for his legal fees anyway?  I thought a lot of his money was supposed to be going to Ron Goldman’s family.  If so, how does he afford what is probably an expensive legal bill.  Wasn’t he supposed to have committed these crimes so he could recover some of his valuable possessions?

To add even more confusion, and stupidity, to this whole thing, O.J. wrote a book called “If I Did It” about how he would have committed the murders.  Guess who published the book?  Ron Goldman’s family!!!

I’m confused.  Is the Goldman family happy he has been convicted or would it be better for him to be out and making money?  Besides thinking this whole thing - O.J.’s whole life since 1995 - is stupid, I don’t know what to think.  What do you think?

Does anyone even remember or does it matter anymore that this was a Hall of Fame Football player?

Presidential Debate: Is There A Round 1 Winner?

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

The polls are in and both presidential candidates seem fit to run the country.  If whatever data was used to come to this conclusion proves to be accurate, thank goodness!  Both candidates seemed to do a pretty good job overall, but the news is so slanted and there are some things to note.

  • There is an article on CNN titled “Round 1 In Debate Goes To Obama, Poll Says.”  This is all well and good until the article mentions the fact that most of the people polled were Democrats and even then Obama only have 51% of the vote.  I would actually think someone at CNN would look at this and not even bother to report it.
  • At this point I think both candidates are coming at us from two different angles.  One is harsh, somewhat aggressive and I think bitter at times.  These actions, during the debate, follow how his campaign has been ran up to this point.  Basically, politics that lean towards the ugly side.  The other candidate seems to be smooth, even if some of his answers may be light.  He is the one who draws people in with his delivery and charisma.  The only question is, how is this going to play for the next four years?  Some may debate it, but we’ve had nearly 8 years of someone looking directly at the camera and blowing smoke.  Do we really want and/or need that anymore?
  • I think it should be noted that Obama didn’t really want to mix it up directly with McCain.  I’m not sure of the gentleman’s name or title who ran the debate, but he sure was egging them on wasn’t he?  He wanted them to talk directly to each other and it just wasn’t happening like that.  Maybe things will heat up later, but last night seemed to be pretty civil.
  • Are the vice-presidential debates going to be more information or entertainment?  I think plenty of people will be in front of the TV with popcorn ready.  Someone sure does have their work cut out for them preparing one of the vice-presidential candidates.  I’m not naming names, but you know exactly who I’m talking about here.

I think we have two candidates with different approaches and for this reason I don’t think there was a clear-cut winner.  Somebody tell me, does winning these debates really have that much of an impact on who is ultimately elected?

Are Statutes Of Limitation Morally Correct?

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Let’s say someone is kidnapped and eventually killed. Multiply that and make that two people. This being the case, how long should the murderer be accountable for these crimes? Should a statute of limitation apply to someone who committed crimes like these? I say as long as that person is taking a breath they should have to pay for committing such crimes.

Well, James Seale did those things and it is possible that he may go free. This happened many, many years ago but his guilt doesn’t seem to be the issue here. The basic issue is he did these things a long time ago and should get a pass. His failing health is also being considered as if that makes it OK to let him be free. There has to be more to this right? Of course there is.

Seales was, or still is, a member of the Klu Klux Klan. Of course the two victims were black - they may have possibly been weighted down and thrown in the river alive. He wasn’t convicted when it happened, back in the 60s, because the police were believed to be Klan members. Is justice always just?

Not only should he do hard time, he should be sat down in a chair that is connected to some serious juice! I’m not saying this based on color, I’m saying this based on the crimes. He may have not been convicted - or even brought to trial - because of color and now the verdict was changed because of time and old age.

Does that seem right to you?

We Are Back, Safe And Refreshed

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Do you know anything about double gates that lead to a backyard?  You know, the kind that will fit an automobile, RV or at least a riding mower through.  If you know what I’m talking about, you know that there is a hole, normally a PVC pipe, in the ground that helps to hold one side of the gate in place.  That hole (PVC pipe) is normally held into the ground by a little cement.  All of this is probably about a foot or more buried so the hole is visible and grass can grow around it - at least that is how I’ve seen them.

I went through all of that to describe to you our only damage from Hurricane Gustav.

I guess the wind blew the gate hard enough to lift this thing - I don’t really know what the official name for it is - right out of the ground.  You can’t really tell from the pictures, but this thing left a hole in the ground.  Shoot, this “damage” is something I’m thankful for because it could have been much worse.  all I have to do is get some Quikcrete, a little PVC and fix this.  I don’t have a bag of money in my backyard so it really isn’t a big deal.  If someone really wants to go back there with a lawnmower, be my guest.

All the excitement has caused us to lay off blogging for a week or so, but we are back and should be ready to go again.

Bernie Mac is Alive!!!

Monday, August 4th, 2008

I’m sitting at work this afternoon and my daughter nonchalantly, and without warning, texts me and says Bernie Mac died today. Hold on, we all know by now, he didn’t. But I surprised myself and instantly began to cry. I am at work trying not to go into the ugly cry (a new job. they don’t know me yet) and simultaneously going online to get the scoop. The scoop is: somehow rumors got to flying saying Bernie was dead when in fact he is very ill but expected to make a full recovery! Let the melodious chorus begin! My spirit was lifted! My Bernie is still with us!!!

So as usual, I had to sit and analyze what just happened. I guess I didn’t realize how much I loved me some Bernie Mac! The Mac man is all that! My first time for truly acknowledging and giving credence to Bernie Mac was Kings of Comedy. (Summa ma…) Anyway, I love hearing that man talk about beating kids down to the white meat. I have never beaten my kids like that, nor do I think it is legal or right, but child… I love hearing Bernie Mac talking about it!

The thing I love about Bernie is, from everything I have seen; he is just a decent guy. He doesn’t stay in the rag magazines. He gives credit to others. He doesn’t wife hop. And it is clear he loves his family. The guy is a good guy! I loved watching Guess Who, Ocean’s 11 and 12, etc., but that doesn’t compare to the many times I would be doubled over laughing at him on the Bernie Mac show. Especially when he would get on Jordan!

Bernie Mac is a naturally, gifted, talented funny man! I am so glad he is still with us, aren’t you!!!

Payperpost (PPP): the New Way to Earn

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

I think I found something that can be beneficial to me and allows me to do something I’m growing fond of: writing.  Payperpost is new, at least new to me, and I think it will be an interesting way to expand my knowledge on various subjects.

The premise is very simple: I can search through topics, do some research and write a post similar to this one detailing what the subject/service/business has to offer.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not going to retire with what I get for doing this, but it will help out.

The money I make from PPP will more than likely go towards keeping this site up and running.  I like having a platform allowing people to talk about relevant subjects, but the site does not run on its own.  PPP will hopefully cover the monthly costs – a good thing for all of us.

I heard about PPP while browsing looking for basically nothing.  I have found some of the most interesting things just looking around and this is another one of those times.

One of the most surprising things about different sites on the internet is the people available to meet and network with.  Facebook, Twitter, Pownce, Friendfeed and now PPP are all places where you can meet people in all walks of life and I look forward to getting to know some people in the PPP community.

OK, lets see how this works out.

Walkman to Ipods: We’ve Come a Long Way

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Walkman is a popular Sony brand used to market its portable audio and video players. The term Walkman is almost history, but those of us around at the time know how common these devices were back in the day. The original Walkman introduced a change in music listening habits, allowing people to carry their own choice of music with them. The original Walkman was marketed in the 80s as the Walkman in Japan, the Soundabout in many other countries including the US, Freestyle in Sweden and the Stowaway in the UK.

I remember when the Walkman played cassette tapes, had a belt clip and was the most popular thing to have. Those things burned through some batteries so fast you almost needed to carry spares with you at all times. Remember how we used to hate to rewind or fast forward because we knew how much battery juice it would take? Come to think about it, we sure did use a lot of things that used batteries back in the day didn’t we?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know what an iPod is, but what about the history? This from Wikipedia: iPod is a popular brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc and launched on October 23, 2001. As of 2008, the current product line-up includes the hard drive-based iPod classic, the touchscreen iPod touch, the video-capable iPod nano, the screenless iPod shuffle and the iPhone. Former products include the compact iPod mini and the spin-off iPod photo (since re-integrated into the main iPod classic line). iPod classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size (the discontinued mini used a Microdrive miniature hard drive). As with many other digital music players, iPods, excluding the iPod touch, can also serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model.

We are somewhere in the digital era - this may only be the infancy - and carrying around CDs, let alone cassette tapes, is a thing of the past. Today you had better have a computer with MP3 files or else the way you get your music is old as dirt. Ipods aren’t the only MP3 players by a long shot, but they have almost become the standard in the category; I know people who say they got an iPod when they really only have a MP3 player. The popular players from Apple range from the shuffle, a device that is about the size of a matchbook, all the way up to the iPod Touch, a device which utilizes a touchscreen to play music, videos, games, check email and many other things.

While these devices still use batteries, we no longer have to change them frequently like the past. Instead, iPods must be plugged in either to a computer or a wall jack so their batteries can be recharged. In fact, the batteries of an iPod are sealed so you couldn’t change them if you wanted (there are actually kits to do this, but that is another topic). Where will we go from here? I don’t know if the size of these devices will get any smaller, but they are sure to get more complex, offer more features and contain more memory at cheaper costs. Solar power is also being discussed as a possibility to power future devices. Don’t think about the old solar power we used on calculators years ago though. There are developments in the works that will allow solar cells (for lack of a better term) to be placed behind the touchscreen which will go unnoticed by the user. I know battery companies can’t be happy about these developments, but what do you think?
