Born Again Christian Forced to Create a Gay Dating Website

Written by:

How does one react to a title like this? It’s outlandish, right? Everyday, I hear things in the news that make me think this world is a hot mess! Okay, so here’s the story behind the title:

Born-again Christian Neil Clark Warren started eHarmony to pair up men and women to help create lasting marriages. After 36 years as a clinical psychologist and counselor of married couples, Dr. Warren realized that marriages that endured were composed of compatible people. Warren enlisted the help of a research professor at the University of Southern California to identify the characteristics between spouses that were consistently associated with the most successful relationships.

In 2005 a New Jersey man, Eric McKinley, accused eHarmony of discriminating against homosexuals by operating a website that searches don’t include people seeking same sex. The company believes’ the complaint was “an unfair characterization of our business,” but they chose to settle because of the “unpredictable nature of litigation.” Theodore B. Olsen, an attorney for eHarmony said that even though the company believed the complaint was “an unfair characterization of our business,” it chose to settle. He states that the legal dispute has been a burden on the company.

Under the settlement eHarmony will do the following: pay the New Jersey state division $50,000 to cover administrative costs to create the site; pay Eric McKinley $5,000; advertise the new gay website in other gay websites, and include pictures of same sex models in advertising and promotions.

This is a bunch of baloney!

I agree that that is a ridiculous situation, but eHarmony also did not seem to possess the courage of their convictions to resist this lawsuit.

There are plenty of web sites that cater to homosexuals only. I believe a web site owner has the full right to decide what market segement they are going to cater to.

Incidentally, I’ve signed up with eHarmony in the past and just flaked out because of the grind to answer the hundreds of questions they present you with in a seemingly unending questionnaire that you have to get through before you can use the site.

Ridiculous! He sold out his Christianity, plain and simple. You are right Kim, a bunch of baloney

  4. Kim Sawyer Says:

Hey RIchard. I, too, believe that a business owner should be able to determine their market segment. They definitely caved in to fear – of being sued. I equate this to being extorted!

We gotta choose sides now and eHarmony chose theirs!

Since I’m naturally cynical, I wonder if eHarmony will eventually make more money by doing this. If he really felt strongly about this, he could just go to court. What happened to the freedom to own and operate a business the owner wants to operate? I don’t know if we know the rest of the story.

  7. Kathy Curry Says:

Yea, I would have just gone to court. He had to pay anyway. Maybe he would have lost and maybe not. But he would still have his dignity in tact and his integrity would not have been questioned.

i haven’t commented in a while but feel the need to do so on this one. this gay stuff has to stop. gay people must think they can do anything just because they’re gay. i hope president obama does something about these people. we’re living in a world gone mad, i said it before and i’ll say it again, when this kind of stuff keeps happening, look up, our redemption draws nigh. it’ll soon be time to go home. i’m thru, pray my strength in the lord.

  9. Richard Catto Says:

@ clydemartinlll: I’m not sure that this is a gay rights issue. This is about the right of a web site owner to cater to a particular niche. As I said in my previous comment, there are web sites which cater exclusively to homosexual dating. There are also web sites that cater to Jewish dating and Muslim dating and every type of niche there is.

When it comes to who people choose to date, people, by nature, discriminate and they have a full right to do so. eHarmony most likely would have won if they had had the will to fight the lawsuit. The real issue here, I believe, is why did they choose not to?

The other question is why did this person sue eHarmony when they had plenty of alternatives open to them? Even if eHarmony had offered homosexual dating, there’s no guarantee that this person would have found a suitable partner. No dating web site offers any guarantees.

It’s strange that this person sued in the first place and stranger still that eHarmony chose to settle.

I don’t think this blog post was intended to bash gays and I think that bashing them is wrong. I believe they are entitled to their personal choice, even if others hold moral views about them. I believe that the Gay community has a right to the same freedoms that heterosexuals enjoy.

Hi, i am Stephen, i am 28 (almost 29) and i am from the UK. Having my own company in the travel business. I struggled with my gay feelings my whole life, as it is not really accepted in my family (i’m Christian) and some close friends now don’t want to know me anymore. I’m a very shy person. Looking for other people to get in touch, meet and probably more :p. My e-mail and MSN is trophymania@hotmail.co.uk (i have a webcam). Stephen Linden-Wyatt

  15. Rob Martin Says:

How would this be any different than a hamburger joint not serving hot dogs? You can’t sue a burger joint for not serving hot dogs, can you? It seems eharmony blew it big time by not going through the legalities of a suit. A friend of mine was taken by them so I don’t know exactly how *christian* either eharmony or Mr. Warren is but I’m sure his God will straighten him out if he’s screwing paying customers, no matter what their sexual preference may be.

  16. justin Says:

Damn that’s ugly…..but after this happened I saw many reactions on some of the top rated gay sites where they were celebrating this as a victory against straight people. Who knows maybe one day they will make a country independent with it’s own laws and administration.
