Album Review: Tye Tribbett & G.A. “Stand Out”

Written by: Tom Sawyer

Tye Tribbett If you’ve been listening to gospel music for the last couple of years, you probably know who Tye Tribbett and Greater Anointing is. Until today, I didn’t know that Tye was actually born Thomas Tyrone Tribbett III in 1977. Greater Anointing, or G.A. as they are more commonly known as, was formed in the late 1990’s and performed with artists like Faith Hill. Maybe we will get into the history at a later time with an artist review, but for now let’s talk about this new album.

Stand Out is the follow-up to the Albums Life and Victory. I’m sure you’ve heard the smash hits No Way and Victory. If listening to those songs makes you tired, you are not alone. This is their interpretation of Gospel pure and simple. It might not be for everyone, but the message – the good news – is there!

This CD is delivering a message; this is clear by how it begins and ends. The first and title track is Stand Out and it asks, no tells, the listeners to stand out without compromise. It mentions christians having hip hop/rap songs as their ring tones and says things like, “It is time to choose…be black or be white, no more shades of grey.” As my former co-worker Tammy would say, “And I know that’s right!” The CD ends with Good In the Hood which simply conveys the message that everything in the hood isn’t all bad. Yes, there is good in the hood!

Listen to this CD at least twice because the first time didn’t go too well for me. Tye Tribbett always comes with something different and I didn’t get it at first. The whole thing just didn’t have any flow for me. After listening to it repeatedly I get it now. This is his type of worship. Tye includes references to scriptures in the song titled Hold On. I Made it Through is the foot-stomping jam of the CD, that is as long as you get past the beginning which sounds like a circus or something. My sister’s favorite song on the CD is Well Done and I see where she is coming from. This song takes a more classic gospel approach and G.A. is on point with this one. The song builds throughout – this is one of those songs that leaves you with your eyes closed and your hands in the air.

Have you ever had a song that centered you or calmed your spirit? You know, that song you had to listen to in your car before you go into work so your mind is right?. Chasing After You (The Morning Song) is that song on this CD (you may need Quicktime to listen). It might just be me, but this is a song you should listen to and categorize it for yourself. As for me, this song is a rock.

As of this writing, Stand Out was the #5 Album on iTunes’ gospel charts which is a great accomplishment considering the competition. Give this CD a chance and I don’t think it will disappoint.

Tom, I was riding in the car with my sister on a long trip and listened to this CD. I must say, I was on the fence about Tye Tribbet ,but after listening to this particular CD, I am a fan and endorser! The fast songs kind of throw me at first, although, I get them. Teetering on the cusp of middle age (lol), I pride myself in trying to stay young and hip, thus Tye Tribbet. But his songs – fast, slow, and in between – speak to any age, let me tell you; young, middle aged, and even old! I go all the way back to No Way and the lyrics, I can’t even brush my teeth without Him! And I know that!

I don’t have this album yet, but it is on my list of “must haves”. Thank you for the extra confirmation!

Every since Tye Tribbett’s first album, I’ve been a fan. Beginning with No Way, Everything (Part I and II), Mighty Long Way, Can’t Live to Victory, I Want It All Back and now, I Made It Through and Chasing After You, Tye Tribbett knows how to, at least in my opinion, put things into perspective as it relates to one’s relationship with God. I think this album continues to show his range in being able to appeal to not only his young fans, but his more mature fans too.

This was a good review of another excellent CD by Tye Tribett.

I have never been a fan of Tye Tribbett. I’ve always felt he was just a little more than what I could handle. However, I think I will have to give this new album a try and see if my opinion will change.

OK y’all I went to see Tye live May 24th so here’s my take on the new album. It’s exceptional. He’s asking us as Christians to realize that we are in this world but not of it so we need to “Stand out” and show a difference. I love “Hold on” “Lord, You are so amazing” and “Well Done” but all the other songs are good too like “Chasing after You.” I like that Tye sings and ministers then comes out and greets the people (briefly). This may be his best work yet y’all keep listening and let it marinate in your spirit so you’ll receive the message it’s bringing!!
