80-Year-Old Black Woman Slammed to the Ground by Police!

What you’re about to see is a video of an 80-year-old Black woman approached by an officer, in a Wal-Mart parking lot, then being slammed to the ground. I got this video off of YouTube. The person who posted it wrote that the lady had been swinging a knife at different people in the parking lot, so the cops were called.
This video was extremely disturbing to me. This is an elderly person and no matter how threatened the officer felt, I feel the situation could have been handled so much better! There is so much blood underneath her…..I really won’t understand any justification for this.

OK. So the police have to “fix” any situation because they don’t know what could potentially happen. But, I think this might be a little excessive. Is there any further information about this? I’m wondering what the lady’s state of mind was at the time.

I will say this, the image of this woman hitting the ground and bleeding is something that sticks. Yes, she was wielding a knife, but I just think there could have been another – gentler – way to neutralize the situation. Her arm/wrist/hand was where the danger was, couldn’t they have done something to focus on where the weapon was while keeping her on her feet or at least making sure she had a softer landing.
I know the police have a job to do and their lives are in danger all the time, but there was a time when our elders were given more respect than this regardless of the circumstances.

@Tom Sawyer – Now I haven’t seen the video… but as a reserve police officer I can offer some insight. As far as training goes, cops are taught how to protect themselves and neutralize the situation as quickly as possible. They are told not to fall into a trap and treat an elderly person with kid gloves just because they are old. She had a knife, she is dangerous even at 80, so treating her with respect will happen when she doesn’t have a knife anymore.
It’s easy to say how things should be, but I’m pretty sure most people wouldn’t want to be in that situation and have to make a split second decision. Again I haven’t seen the video so I can’t say wether the force used was excessive or not.
