Little Beauties: Are 6 Year Old Girls Being Exploited?

A couple of weeks ago, I was watching VH1. You know the channel who’s given us infamous shows such as Flavor of Love (1, 2 and 3), Rock of Love, I Love New York, etc… I hate to admit it, but I’ve watched these shows and am just amazed at what people do to be on TV. So, as I watched VH1, I saw a program titled Little Beauties. It was a reality show about beauty pageants for 6 year old little girls. Now, I am pregnant and I am having a little girl. After watching this show, I was saddened by what I saw. I saw little girls wearing tons of makeup. I saw little girls with their hair hardened into ‘big’ hair styles via hair spray. I saw little girls sashaying down a runway in bikini swimsuits. I saw little girls acting like adults.
Why can’t society let little girls be little girls? Why does society try and make them adults before their time? Why do parents allow their kids to be exploited just for some exposure and maybe a little bit of money? I just don’t understand. This is something that is very prevalent in today’s society, which appears to be in a constant decline. As my child gets older and society continues its downward spiral, I’m afraid to think of what they’ll be showing on TV, starring children. I ask what is the world coming to, or shall I say going?

Kim, I hear you. Two things I have to say.
Although we live in a society today where everything goes, the more sensational, the better for TV; this young girl pageantry and exploitation has been going on a long time, ie: Brooke Sheilds.
Secondly, when it comes to parents and their children, parents loose their minds! For real! Parents blindly do things, that if it weren’t their child, they would clearly see how ridiculous it is. Parents think their children are cuter, smarter, cuter, politer, cuter, more well behaved, cuter, etc., than the next kid! Kid you not! Showing off your kid in venues like the pageants, tv commercials, soft porn photography, etc. is just something those parents probably feel is their duty to society, because of how precious their little china doll is. I’m sure at some point those moms and dads are going to look back and wonder what they’ve done.
Like the girls you are speaking about, JonBenét Ramsey, the little princess of the pageants, was six when she met her demise. She would be 18 year old this August. I’m sure if her parents had it to do over again, they would let her be a little girl. It is so wrong. Nobody should have to live someone else’s dream. Until that child is old enough to say what they want and don’t want, let them is a child! But again I say all parents get stuck on stupid when it comes to their child. At some point, EVERY parent thinks more highly of their child than they ought! Romans 12:3

You know what, I forgot about Brooke Shields. Yesterday, I saw an add for Dereon, Beyonce’s fashion line. She now has a line of clothes for kids and the little girls represented in the add were made up just like those little girls in that pageant. Kim, that little girl looked scared to be staning in those high heels. Most times, little girls are happy to play dress up with Mommy’s high heels, but she looks miserable, and they used that shot in this ad! Why can’t kids just be kids. It only last briefly compared to grown up life and all the trials that come with it.

I can’t stand when parents try to live through their kids! I can’t even watch that stuff, I get so upset! What they need to do is take those same mothers and make them model. Not high fashion, but those same ridiculous outfits their daughters have to wear, that would be funny! People put so much into these extra curriclar activities they are forgetting about what’s important having fun. Right now I have a 12 year old cousin who’s tired of playing AAU basketball. His coaches are trying to put a guilt trip on him because he wants to take the summer off. These parents and coaches are ruining these kids life! Then they wonder why these former child prodigies end up knocking off convience stores!

Kim, they might be trying to make money but as I said before, nobody should have to live someone else’s dream. I think these mommies are living vicariously through their kids. I’ve seen it! I have seen people who called themselves saved and living holy, revel in their unsaved – do anything, say anything, wear anything – kids. It’s like, they can’t do these things because they are saved, but they love seeing their kids do them and brag about it!
These pageant mothers are probably past their prime and ugly so they push their child out there to live their dream. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

This is such a disgusting aspect of our society. Pageantry for little girls is only on ugly piece of the whole issue. Even if they aren’t sticking their six year old in a bikini and mascara, parents are enrolling their kids in far too many extracurricular activities. A six year old playing two sports and an instrument and enrolled in acting classes is as unhealthy a six year old as the little beauty queens. It all comes back to the need that has been mentioned before of letting kids be kids. Let them live and be little. Why suck the youth out of them with high heels and make up or soccer, fencing, the viola, and pottery?

I love this blog. Surprisingly I have toyed with the idea of trying to put together one similar to this as well, though I am not having the know-how on how to do it. What is this “blogging” software?
