Baseball in Florida Should Be for Spring Training Only

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Before 1993, baseball in Florida only meant one thing, it was spring training and the baseball season was on the way.  All over Florida, major league teams would come and get ready for the regular season by training in Florida.  Teams even became known from what place they trained.  Legions of fans would take off down to Florida and watch their teams get ready for the season and hope filled the air.  Baseball in Florida meant optimism and how the new season brought a fresh start to everyone in the league.

In 1993, baseball expanded into Florida, bringing the Florida Marlins to the Miami area.  After four seasons, they incredibly built a team that had won the World Series.  After they won the World Series, they went on a “fire sale” because owner Wayne Huizenga claimed massive losses financially, so they traded off of the most of the team’s best players.  The next five seasons, the Marlins had a losing record, but in 2003, the Marlins did it again and won the World Series, becoming the only National League team that has won multiple World Series titles since the Marlins came into existence.

In 1998, baseball expanded into Florida again, this time going to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area, with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (now just called Rays).  This organization has not been nearly as fortunate as the Marlins as they have been in last place every season they have been in existence, for the exception of 2004, where they were next to last.  This current season has been their most successful ever as they are currently 44-30, a half game behind the Boston Red Sox for 1st place in the American East, known as the most difficult division in baseball since the Red Sox and the New Yankees play there.  This is an organization whose best season has been 70-91 before this season.

The problem with baseball in Florida is that they have been so poorly supported.  The Marlins had over three million fans come out to see them in their first season, but despite winning two World Series they have only gotten two million fans one time since.  The consistent obstacle for the Marlins have been trying to get a stadium built and since they have been unsuccessful, the Marlins have been looking to relocate for years now.  The Rays have the same issues.  Tropicana Field is known as one of the worst places to see a baseball game and when you add the fact that the team has been poor since they started as a franchise, there is no wonder why fan support has been poor for the Rays as well.

The problem is that Florida is a baseball state.  For years, spring training baseball has brought legions of fans from the north to Florida to watch some baseball.  In fact, St. Petersburg is hosts spring training for 9 major league teams, including the Chicago Cubs who have had spring training there since 1913 and has had more spring training games than any other city in the United States.  Yet, the major league teams in Florida are unable to get support for their teams and are always complaining about the facilities.  The problem is not the fans, but major league baseball.  They need to leave Florida to host spring training and go elsewhere to host major league teams.

Christianity 101 – Love. Part I

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

There are so many times when we as Christians put down our Christianity when it is convenient, and pick it back up when it is convenient.  There are parts of the bible that we ignore and bypass in order to satisfy our flesh and do the things we want.  And we all do it, or have done it, at some point in our life.  I question how we expect to please God when we live our lives this way.  I ask myself; is God more displeased with the “Christian” that lives this way, knowing to do right but shirking the things he chooses not to do, or the one that isn’t even trying to live a “Christian” life, but knows he should.  I hear what you are saying, both are wrong.  God simply wants us to do the right thing.

Let’s talk about what I consider to be the number one topic of Christianity 101 and also, what I believe should be, the first principle of life:  loving one another.  I am always amazed when I hear proclaimed Christians say, they don’t like someone.  I am more amazed when I hear them say, they don’t have a reason.  I realize, all personalities don’t click and some people are more comfortable for us to be around than others, but to blatantly dislike someone, without having a reason, and not have love for them is Christianity 101, WRONG!

The bible clearly speaks about love over and over and over.  I am of the belief that the reason it is dealt with so much is because of our seemingly natural instinct not to love.  But how can we not love when God so clearly spells out what he expects of us in His word concerning love!?  Here are just a few compelling scriptures, in the new international version, for easier understanding.

The bible says:

John 13:34“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

John 13:35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Romans 12:10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 13:8Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.

Galatians 5:13You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.

Ephesians 4:2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

I have not even begun to scratch the surface with this list!  There are so many places within the bible that instructs us to love.  He didn’t put stipulations on it.  He just says love.

It is clear, although we claim to want to be like Christ, our actions say different.  Why won’t we just love?  He did soooo very much to prove His love for us and He continues to show us His love.  But we have this reason, and that excuse, and a loophole, and a free pass to forego all of His instructions and not do His will.  Or at least we think we do.  But none of those things fly when it comes to disobeying His word.  So tell me, where does not doing His will leave us?  Better yet, which direction will not doing His will take us?

I plan for Christianity 101 become a reoccurring bible class topic, at least once a month.  This week’s topic on loving one another will probably have at least three parts to it before moving on.  It’s a heavy topic, with several angles and issues I think we need to cover.  Let’s begin talking about this but before you post your comment, ask yourself, am I doing one of the simplest (or is it simple for you?) things Christ could ask of me, do I love…?

Are the Giants Ready to Repeat or Retreat?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Nothing can take away the Super Bowl for the New York Giants.  Their improbable title run will be talked about for decades to come.  How they won 3 playoff games on the road in order to just get to the Super Bowl, including Brett Favre’s last game in Lambeau Field (at least that’s what he told us).  Then holding the league’s greatest offense to only 14 points by doing the most important in football, pressuring the quarterback and scoring the game-winning touchdown on a drive that included one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history.  Beating the undefeated Patriots was one of the biggest upsets in the NFL history and the exciting way in which it happened, people started wondering if a repeat could happen.

Looking at the Giants now, one may wonder how they are going to make it to the season.  Their star tight end, Jeremy Shockey, was in a ton of trade discussions, mainly because of the Giants’ success without him last season and the play of his replacement last season in rookie tight end Kevin Boss.   Then Michael Strahan, one of the best defensive ends of the last decade, decided to retire, taking away one of the greatest pass rushers ever.  Their star wide receiver, Plaxico Burress, has been holding out waiting for a new contract.  Ahmad Bradshaw, one of their running backs, who really emerged at the end of last year, was caught driving while intoxicated.  This was not exactly the type of offseason the Giants were aiming for when preparing for this upcoming season.

The thing is that the New York Giants are still the champions and means something.  Their quarterback, Eli Manning, ridiculed mercilessly for most of last year, ended up being a Super Bowl MVP and one has to believe that his conference and his burden of being “Payton’s little brother” has been lifted.  Last year’s rookies, all of whom seemed to have a role in the Super Bowl win, now have experience to go with their talent, which should make them a little better at least.  This year’s draft looks to be successful as well as they addressed their issues at defensive backs with 1st round pick Kenny Phillips, a free safety and their 2nd round pick Terrell Thomas, a cornerback.  Talent looks like it will not be a problem.

The biggest plus for the Giants may be their fans.  They have to be tired of their rivals up north in Boston winning title after title in one sport or another.  The Giants made sure that the Boston area did not have the trifecta of winning a title in the three major sports in the United States.  This means that the Giants should have a loyal following this season, which looks like it could be another one full of adventure, nothing new for the New York Giants.

Walkman to Ipods: We’ve Come a Long Way

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Walkman is a popular Sony brand used to market its portable audio and video players. The term Walkman is almost history, but those of us around at the time know how common these devices were back in the day. The original Walkman introduced a change in music listening habits, allowing people to carry their own choice of music with them. The original Walkman was marketed in the 80s as the Walkman in Japan, the Soundabout in many other countries including the US, Freestyle in Sweden and the Stowaway in the UK.

I remember when the Walkman played cassette tapes, had a belt clip and was the most popular thing to have. Those things burned through some batteries so fast you almost needed to carry spares with you at all times. Remember how we used to hate to rewind or fast forward because we knew how much battery juice it would take? Come to think about it, we sure did use a lot of things that used batteries back in the day didn’t we?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know what an iPod is, but what about the history? This from Wikipedia: iPod is a popular brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc and launched on October 23, 2001. As of 2008, the current product line-up includes the hard drive-based iPod classic, the touchscreen iPod touch, the video-capable iPod nano, the screenless iPod shuffle and the iPhone. Former products include the compact iPod mini and the spin-off iPod photo (since re-integrated into the main iPod classic line). iPod classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size (the discontinued mini used a Microdrive miniature hard drive). As with many other digital music players, iPods, excluding the iPod touch, can also serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model.

We are somewhere in the digital era – this may only be the infancy – and carrying around CDs, let alone cassette tapes, is a thing of the past. Today you had better have a computer with MP3 files or else the way you get your music is old as dirt. Ipods aren’t the only MP3 players by a long shot, but they have almost become the standard in the category; I know people who say they got an iPod when they really only have a MP3 player. The popular players from Apple range from the shuffle, a device that is about the size of a matchbook, all the way up to the iPod Touch, a device which utilizes a touchscreen to play music, videos, games, check email and many other things.

While these devices still use batteries, we no longer have to change them frequently like the past. Instead, iPods must be plugged in either to a computer or a wall jack so their batteries can be recharged. In fact, the batteries of an iPod are sealed so you couldn’t change them if you wanted (there are actually kits to do this, but that is another topic). Where will we go from here? I don’t know if the size of these devices will get any smaller, but they are sure to get more complex, offer more features and contain more memory at cheaper costs. Solar power is also being discussed as a possibility to power future devices. Don’t think about the old solar power we used on calculators years ago though. There are developments in the works that will allow solar cells (for lack of a better term) to be placed behind the touchscreen which will go unnoticed by the user. I know battery companies can’t be happy about these developments, but what do you think?

Worthwhile Cause or Internet Scam – You Decide

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

I didn’t “donate” and I’m not sure I will because the legitimacy of this whole thing is dubious at best. I tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to put this out here: you tell me if you think this is a worthwhile cause and if the majority say it is, I will donate. At this point you probably have no idea what I’m talking about so let me explain.

There is a young man named Brendan who wants to attend Oxford to get his MBA. According to Brendan, he is fascinated by how business can be used as a tool for social change and that is how he plans to use his degree. Actually, his degree would be in social entrepreneurship so I’m assuming he would create business opportunities for those living in poverty. Does that sound about right? So he is going to get a pretty good degree and instead of using it to line his own pockets, he is going to use it to make a change in the world. That’s the part I’m not quite sure about – I would use it to get the best job I could get. I feel that way partly because I think it would almost be the responsible thing to do given the cost of the education. It is almost like buy a nice car and letting it sit in the garage most of the time (wink).

Ok, so this is how Brendan plans on making this happen. He set up a website, www.3bucksforbrendan.com, and he is asking people to donate…$3. The total he needs is $90,000 so he just needs 30,000 people to donate. If you go to his site he has a video complete with children living in poverty and everything. He also has a disclaimer at the bottom that says he will anonymously donate the money to Engineers Without Borders and Medecins Sans Frontieres if he doesn’t go to Oxford. I think the anonymous part will be impossible and I will tell you why.

Brendan’s story has prompted John Chow (www.johnchow.com) to post a blog about his cause. You may be asking yourself what difference this makes. Well, Mr. Chow is one of the most profitable Internet marketers around and mentioning this on his site gets attention. Basically, there are already many people, maybe hundreds, who have seen this article on Mr. Chow’s site and he just posted it yesterday. According to Brendan’s site, he made $2,300 in 24 hours.

If nothing else, I find this interesting and will be watching this site to see how this young man does. But should I donate my money? Leave a comment and I will go with the majority. After all, it is only $3.

That’s what’s up on Monday June 23rd, 2008.

Laker Fans Should Be Patient

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Losing in the NBA finals is a difficult situation for a fan of any NBA team. Losing in the NBA finals to the Boston Celtics is the most irritating situation possible for a Los Angeles Laker fan. This season was one of the most surprising ever for Laker fans everywhere, especially when at the beginning of the season they were not sure if Kobe Bryant would actually be a Laker. After a summer of acrimony, no one was sure of anything in Lakerland and the thought of Bryant in another uniform was a frightening thought. Fortunately, the season started.

The Lakers got out to another surprising start, just like the year before. They were leading the West with a 26-11 record and suddenly, also just like the year before, the injuries started hitting them with the biggest loss being Andrew Bynum. The difference was in Kobe, who publicly stated that the same team and players that he been critical of in the offseason was now, “a championship level team.” This emboldened the Laker front office, making a trade for Pau Gasol without disturbing the core of the team.

After the Gasol trade, the Lakers looked like a new team. They went to win the Western Conference with a 57-25, a game better than New Orleans and the world champion San Antonio Spurs. In the playoffs, they were the only team to sweep another team as they beat the Denver Nuggets 4-0 in the first round. They beat Utah Jazz 4 games to 2 and in the Western Conference finals, they beat the defending champion Spurs 4 games to 1. In a season that started wondering if Kobe Bryant would still be on the team saw him win his first MVP award and led them to the finals. Up until the finals, it had been a dream season for the Lakers in the most surprising fashion.

The NBA finals turned what had been an outstanding season for the Lakers to one of doubt. The Celtics not only beat them 4 games to 2, but in the final game pounded them by 39 points, the most ever in a series-clinching game. Laker fans should however, be joyful. Making the finals was an incredible feat considering that the team was pretty much the same as the year before with the addition of Pau Gasol. The Lakers never got Andrew Bynum back from his knee injury and Trevor Ariza got back from a broken foot in the playoffs, but regained his form from during the season. If Laker fans take a step back, they should realize that the Lakers made it to the finals without their starting center and with a group that had absolutely no playoff success outside of the coaching staff, Derek Fisher, and Kobe Bryant. Like last season, the pressure is on the front office to assemble the pieces around Bryant, who actually turns 30 in August, to win a championship, but even more, their fans are expecting another run back to the finals. The finals were very frustrating, but a little patience and the Lakers could be on the verge of having a much better team than last year with an even better result. This could be something Laker fans can be patient for.

God Centered Prayers

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

2Ch 1:10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?

11 And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:

12 Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.

  •       Instead of asking for wealth, Solomon asked for the competence to rule God’s people.
  •       Because the desire of his heart unselfish (without pretending or acting humble), God gave him what he did not ask for.
  •       Note: It is not always necessary to ask God for some things.   Some things come with other things.  Mt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
  •       Check your heart.  Ask yourself, “Why do I want what I am praying for?”  Otherwise you might be asking God to do something for you to disprove someone else or to prove that you are more righteous than they are.
  •       God should have a reason to answer your prayers.

Re 4:9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created

The entirety of creation will honor the Lord.

  • Even the elders will lay their crowns and indications of royalty before Him who exceeds and supersedes them.
  • Who are we but what grace through faith has made us?  There is no power but God’s power.  The righteousness we enjoy and celebrate came from himanyway.
  •       When we pray we must recognize:
  •
    • His precedence over the most formidable and prominent issues.
    • That He was before all things and is superior to anything that came after Him.
    • His worth
    • That it is right to honor him
    • His right to have pleasure.  And we must obligate ourselves to bring Him pleasure.

1Ki 18:36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

  • Elijah submitted himself as a servant, not to overrule God, but to carry out His will.  What an honor!
  • Elijah could have been consumed with self-vindication, but he did what he did because God instructed him to.
  • Somehow we must know how to come boldly and humbly-at the same time.  The word of God calls for both.
  • The prophet knew who God was and took the time to recognize Him by name.  Don’t be in a hurry.  Take the time to call out the name of the Lord when you pray.
  • His reasoning for doing exploits and calling for phenomenal things from God was for people to know the same things about God that he knew..
  • He was set for the defense of God.  His attitude was, “God, you must look good on the earth.”  He prayed with the reputation of God in mind first.
  • Where is your concern for God’s dignity on the earth?  You do have it, don’t you?

Lu 7: 2 And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.

3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:

5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

6 Then Jesus went with them.

  • Will Jesus go with you?  (vs. 6)
  • The centurion ALREADY gave and did justice to the Jews.
  • It provided the basis for intercession.  It should be noted that intercession is not long, hard praying.  An intercessor is a person who has influence with God and has the character to back their demands.
  • These Jews were able to go to Jesus on the behalf of the centurion and present a spiritual argument to Jesus that moved him.
  • Do you really have a case?  Or do you only have desires?  Why do you want what you ask God for?  And why should God give you what you ask for?  What glory will He get when your request is honored?  Just a testimony?  Come on……..please!  Even if you don’t praise Him, the rock can.

Tyra Banks Wins An Emmy For Her Talk Show

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Yesterday, the Tyra Banks Show won the first ever Daytime Emmy for informative talk show. This was made possible because new categories were created for the Daytime Emmys. By creating an informative talk show category, the Tyra Banks Show didn’t have to compete with Regis Philbin, Kelly Rippa, Ellen DeGeneres or the ladies from The View for outstanding talk show host. Personally, I am very happy for Miss Tyra. I think she has evolved into an astue business woman, as well as a decent talk show host.

If you all remember, Tyra began her career as a model, then became a supermodel. In 2005, she retired from modeling at the ripe, young age of 32 — two years after she launched the now renowned America’s Next Top Model. In 2005, the Tyra Banks show premiered and has evolved into a decent talk show. I have to admit that initially, I didn’t care for the show simply because I thought she was imitating Oprah’s style too much. But that shouldn’t be too suprising since Oprah is her “inspiration.”

Over these past three years, Tyra has come into her own and I applaud her on her success. Just like Oprah was an inspiration to her, she has become an inspiration to others. She isn’t even 40 yet, and she has had major success in three different career fields: Model, Producer and now Talk Show Host. Now I know there are some people who are like, yeah, yeah, so what. But come on now, you gotta admit Miss Tyra has accomplished a lot – don’t you agree?

Vitamin M

Friday, June 20th, 2008

So what do I mean by vitamin M?  People in the military call it vitamin M because it is prescribed for whatever health problems occur from head to toe.  At least that is how it seems.  You probably know by now what I’m talking about is Motrin, something so many of us are familiar with; for the life of me I can’t remember using Motrin growing up.  What did we do growing up as kids without motrin?  Surely, our health will all decline since we weren’t raised with motrin pumping through our systems!  NOT!

The information below is what I found with a quick Internet search.  Look at it and tell me what you think.

What is Motrin?
Motrin is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.
Motrin is used to reduce fever and treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as headache, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps, or minor injury.
Motrin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Important information about Motrin
This medicine can increase your risk of life-threatening heart or circulation problems, including heart attack or stroke. This risk will increase the longer you use Motrin. Do not use this medicine just before or after having heart bypass surgery (also called coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG).
Seek emergency medical help if you have symptoms of heart or circulation problems, such as chest pain, weakness, shortness of breath, slurred speech, or problems with vision or balance.
This medicine can also increase your risk of serious effects on the stomach or intestines, including bleeding or perforation (forming of a hole). These conditions can be fatal and gastrointestinal effects can occur without warning at any time while you are taking Motrin. Older adults may have an even greater risk of these serious gastrointestinal side effects.

OK, the reason why Motrin has me sort of tweaked right now is because I’ve seen firsthand what it can do to someone.  I know of a recent situation where (prescribed) Motrin masked some symptoms that were almost literally 24 hours away from killing someone.  Also, on a more personal note, a physical therapist told me he thinks Motrin is over-prescribed.  We had this conversation in February of 2007 during a consultation after I hurt my ankle.  I had x-rays, a MRI and physical therapy in hopes of making my injured ankle better.  Oh, of course I was prescribed Motrin too.

The last time I checked it is June of 2008, almost a year and a half after my injury, and I sit here with my ankle propped up on a pillow following surgery that will have me out of work for three weeks!  After many visits to the doctor, I was given a consult to see the Podiatrist.  After looking at an x-ray, he said something along the lines of, “They should have known Motrin and physical therapy wouldn’t fix this.” Hello! I knew this a long time ago and that is why I kept going back.

Please, be careful with Motrin.  I can’t think of a more popular prescription, but is this really the cure for everything that ails the body from head to toe?  What do you think?

The Celtics Continue the Roll for New England

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Every city or state dreams for the roll that the sports teams in the New England area are on. It does not matter the sport because if it is in New England, they are winning. Just think about the New England sports teams before this decade. The New England Patriots were a losing franchise and had never won a Super Bowl before. The Boston Red Sox were going on 80 years of pure frustration in not winning a World Series. The Boston Celtics were still upset that they did not get a chance to draft Tim Duncan in the lottery. Nothing much was going right in New England, but then came the year 2000.
First, there were the New England Patriots. They got it all started with the incredible 2001 season with the emergence of Tom Brady and the improbable run through the playoffs. After missing the playoffs in 2002, the Patriots then went on one of the greatest two-year runs in the NFL history in 2003 and 2004, winning the Super Bowl in both seasons. What is frightening is that there very easily could be two more Super Bowl championships for the Patriots. An incredible comeback be their biggest rivals this decade, Payton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, kept them from the Super Bowl following the 2006 season and after going 18-0 in 2007, they lost to Eli Manning and the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. There is no question that the team of the decade in the NFL has been the New England Patriots.
Before 2000, all the Boston Red Sox fans wanted was to beat the vaulted New York Yankees. The Yankees were dominating major league baseball in every way and had even acquired Roger Clemens, one of the best Red Sox pitchers ever. In 2003, the Red Sox lost a fantastic 7-game series to the Yankees in the American League Championship Series off of an Aaron Boone home run in the 11th inning. Instead of falling apart, the Red Sox went right back to the American League Championship Series and faced the Yankees again. The Yankees took what looked to be a insurmountable 3-0 lead in the series, but with incredible performances by David Ortiz and Curt Schilling, the Red Sox became the first baseball team to ever win a series after being down 0-3. Winning the World Series was almost an aftermath as they swept the St. Louis Cardinals to win their first World Series since 1918. Instead of going 84 more seasons, the Red Sox just went 3 more seasons before they won their next World Series, which was another sweep, this time against the Colorado Rockies. As of now, the Red Sox are the team of the decade in baseball.
There is no way that the Boston Celtics are the best basketball team of the decade. In fact, it could be said that this was the worst decade of Celtic basketball until this past season. Before the 2008 season, the season appeared to be another disaster as the Celtics lost out on the NBA lottery, but it was actually a stroke of good luck. They traded their pick and a couple of other players for Ray Allen. Then they traded even more players for Kevin Garnett and suddenly, the Celtics were the team to beat in the 2008 season. They did not disappoint as they won 66 games, a 42-game improvement from the year before, the biggest in the history of the NBA. The Celtics made the NBA finals for the first time in 21 years and happened to face their major nemesis, the Los Angeles Lakers, but they were not going to be denied as the Celtics won their first title in 22 seasons.
The success of New England sports teams has not been limited to their pro teams. The Connecticut Huskie basketball program has been the most successful this decade. The men’s program won the national title in 2004, but they have been the second-best program on campus. The women’s program has won 4 national titles this decade, including 3 in a row from 2002-2004, the second women’s program in NCAA history to do so.
You can say many things, but this decade, when you look for titles, the New England area is the place to look for those titles.
